God's Kids in Summerville, SC

7-29-13

Dear Family,

My time is so short, but we really have had such a great week here in Summerville! Saturday we had our first baptism in this ward and it was such a success! Afterward we were helping Mary as soon as she came out of the water and her whole countenance was changed. She was so nervous before and almost didn't want to come that morning but she came out of the water and said she felt like 50 pounds had been lifted off her back and thanked us saying she really had been waiting so long for this day. She looked so beautiful coming to sacrament the next day for her confirmation and the first thing she said was "this is day 2 of my new life!" Love it!

We made a lot of progress with Rhi this week and her parents are now supportive of her decision to be baptized, so in 2 weeks she should be there!

It hit me this week another reason a mission is so wonderful, it is because you get to be a part of SO many lives!-- Members, less-actives, investigators, missionaries, etc. I've honestly been kind of surprised that I have been in SC for this long. I think it has given me an opportunity to look for even more reasons why I am here. It is so satisfying to be a part of these people's lives. My WML (Ward Mission Leader) told me this week that he was going thru the names we had given him and he had a pretty powerful confirmation that there were people on that list that specifically needed me to be here and it's been amazing to feel that.

I re-read ‘The Family: A Proclamation to the World’ this week. That Document is incredible!!! If you haven't read it lately you should re-read it! (It helped that we memorized it as a family years ago so I've been able to quote it in lessons a few times this week because it came back more easily). I especially love the part about how our purpose is to obtain a physical body and progress toward perfection and ultimately realize (our) divine destiny as heirs of eternal life! We've really seemed to emphasize a lot this week to everyone how important it is that we are continually making that progress. Part of the reason we are here is to recognize that we are children of God! My comp spoke in church yesterday and said "Most parents tell their kids that they can do anything… but my parents also told me why I can do anything." Her mom sang to her "I am a child of God" every night before she went to bed and even now she has her sing it when she is at home because it is so important for us to remember that!

Jesus Christ didn't die for us because we were mediocre creations; he died for us because we are children of God with that divine heritage!
My time just ran out so I can’t finish that thought, but I love y’all so, so much and I think you’re wonderful!

Love,

Sister Lewis
